Biography
Jonas Vingegaard (full name Jonas Vingegaard Hansen) was born on 10 December 1996 in Hillerslev, in the Thy region of northern Denmark. He played football and handball as a child and took up cycling in 2007 at the local club Thy Cykle Ring, after watching the start of a Danmark Rundt stage in Thisted. He later rode for Aalborg Cykle Ring and Odder CK, and in May 2016 he signed with the Danish Continental team ColoQuick–Cult. A broken femur after a crash at the 2017 Tour des Fjords interrupted his early career.
Vingegaard joined Team Jumbo–Visma in 2019 and won stage 6 of that year’s Tour de Pologne. His breakthrough came in 2021, when he finished second at the Tour de France. He won the Tour in 2022, with two stage wins and the mountains classification, and won it again in 2023. He also finished second at the 2023 Vuelta a España behind his teammate Sepp Kuss, and was named the 2023 Vélo d’Or winner. In April 2024 a crash at the Itzulia Basque Country left him with a punctured lung, a broken collarbone and broken ribs. He still returned for the Tour de France, won stage 11 and finished second, 6 minutes 17 seconds behind Tadej Pogačar. In 2025 he was second at the Tour again, then won the Vuelta a España with three stage wins.
The 2026 season began with overall victories at Paris–Nice and the Volta a Catalunya. At the Giro d’Italia, his first start in the race, he took the pink jersey on stage 14 and won the general classification with five stage wins (stages 7, 9, 14, 16 and 20). That made him the eighth rider to have won all three Grand Tours. At the Tour de France his team won the opening team time trial in Barcelona, which put him in the yellow jersey until Pogačar took it on stage 3. On 19 July, on stage 15, he crashed and fractured his collarbone while second overall, 4 minutes 30 seconds behind Pogačar, and left the race. On 17 August it was confirmed that he would not race again in 2026 and would focus on recovery and the 2027 season. The team’s website lists his contract as running to 2028.
