Biography
Pietro Mattio is an Italian road cyclist, born on 27 June 2004 in Cuneo. He is 1.84 m tall and rides for Team Visma | Lease a Bike, where he has been a team member since 2023, first in the Development Team and from 2026 in the WorldTeam. His current contract runs to 2027.
Mattio first rode a racing bike at the age of six and later rode for the Italian club Vigor Cycling Team before joining the Visma Development Team on 1 January 2023. He had attended several training camps with the squad beforehand. Development staff say that when he arrived he hardly spoke English and was shy, and that he grew into a tactically strong, task-focused team rider. In 2024 he won the mountains classification at the Orlen Nations Grand Prix, finished third in the Italian under-23 road race championship and was fifth overall at the Istrian Spring Trophy. Visma also notes his fourth place in the mountains classification at the Giro d’Italia Next Gen that year.
In 2025 he finished fifth at Paris–Roubaix Espoirs and sixth overall at the Alpes Isère Tour. He also made his first appearances with the WorldTeam, and he led out Matthew Brennan as the final man when Brennan won Rund um Köln. On 30 May 2025 Visma announced that he would move up to the WorldTeam on a two-year contract.
The 2026 season is his first as a professional at WorldTour level. His first race in the new role was the Santos Tour Down Under in January, where he finished 86th overall and eighth in the youth classification. Later in the spring he rode Strade Bianche, Paris–Roubaix, where he took 93rd place, and the Tour de Romandie. In August 2026 he won the youth classification at the Renewi Tour. He took the orange jersey on the third day, defended it through a demanding final stage in Leuven and finished 24th overall, which he described as his first youth classification win in a WorldTour race. His teammate Filippo Fiorelli finished tenth overall in the same race.
