Biography

Matthew Brennan was born on 6 August 2005 in Darlington, County Durham, and began cycling with the local club Stockton Wheelers. He first made his name on the track. In 2023 he became junior world champion in the individual pursuit, setting a junior world record, and in the Madison with Ben Wiggins. That year he also rode on the road for the British team Fensham Howes–MAS Design.

He joined the Visma development team in 2024, where he won the Trofej Umag, the Poreč Trophy and a stage of the Giro Next Gen, and he moved up to the WorldTeam for 2025. His first season at that level brought many wins. He took two stages of the Volta a Catalunya, a stage of the Tour de Romandie and a stage of the Tour de Pologne, and he won the Tour of Norway overall together with its points and young rider classifications. He also won the British under-23 road race title. In 2025 he extended his contract with the team until 2029.

His 2026 season has included wins at several levels. He opened with a stage win at the Santos Tour Down Under on 25 January and was second at the Great Ocean Road Race. On 1 March he won Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne, the first British winner of that race since Mark Cavendish in 2015. In May he won three stages and the points classification at the Flèche du Sud in Luxembourg, and in August he won two stages of the Vuelta a Burgos. At his first Grand Tour, the Vuelta a España, he won stages 2, 5, 11, 16 and 17 and took second place in the points classification, finishing 108th overall. The team website counts 12 victories for him in 2026. He is 1.77 m tall and his contract runs to 2029.
