Biography

Edoardo Affini is an Italian road cyclist who rides for Visma | Lease a Bike. He was born in Mantua on 24 June 1996 and is known as a time trial specialist and a versatile rouleur. He has been part of the Dutch WorldTeam since 2021, and the team’s website lists his contract as running until 2029.

Affini’s first results came as a junior and under-23 rider. In 2014 he won the junior road race at the European Championships. In 2018, riding for the SEG Racing Academy, he took the European under-23 time trial title, the time trial at the Mediterranean Games and both Italian under-23 titles, in the road race and the time trial. That season earned him a place at the WorldTeam Mitchelton–Scott for 2019. In his first year there he won a stage of the Tour of Norway and the stage 6 time trial at the Tour of Britain. His 2020 Giro d’Italia ended on stage 7 because of a broken hand.

He moved to Jumbo-Visma for 2021 and became a regular in the team’s Giro d’Italia line-ups, finishing the race every year from 2021 to 2025, as well as a key rider in team time trials. At the 2022 Vuelta a España he was part of the team that won the opening team time trial, and he wore the red leader’s jersey for a day. He has also won medals in the mixed team relay at the World Championships: bronze in 2021, silver in 2022 and bronze in 2024. In 2024 he won the European time trial title and then the bronze medal in the individual time trial at the World Championships in Zürich. In July 2025 he rode his first Tour de France, in a role built around supporting Jonas Vingegaard on flat stages.

Two team time trial wins marked his 2026 season. Visma | Lease a Bike won stage 3 of the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes on 9 June, and on 4 July it won the opening stage of the Tour de France in Barcelona, ahead of Netcompany INEOS and UAE Team Emirates XRG. Affini did not finish that Tour: ProCyclingStats records that he left the race on stage 19 to Alpe d’Huez. In the spring he finished Milano–Sanremo (144th) and Gent–Wevelgem (110th), but he did not finish E3 Saxo Classic, Dwars door Vlaanderen, the Tour of Flanders or Paris–Roubaix. In October he finished the Eneco Tour in 65th place overall.
