Biography

Steven Kruijswijk was born on 7 June 1987 in Nuenen, in the south of the Netherlands. He began his career with the Rabobank Continental Team in 2007, won the under-23 category of the Dutch national road race championships in 2009, and has been part of the same team structure since 2010. That structure has been called Rabobank, Belkin, LottoNL–Jumbo, Jumbo–Visma and, now, Visma | Lease a Bike. A climber and stage-race rider, he has taken two professional victories: a stage of the 2011 Tour de Suisse and the overall classification of the 2014 Arctic Race of Norway.

He has finished in the top five of all three Grand Tours. He was eighth at the 2011 Giro d’Italia and seventh in 2015. His best-known race is the 2016 Giro: he took the pink jersey on stage 14 and led by about three minutes after stage 16, but crashed into a snow bank on the descent of the Colle dell’Agnello on stage 19 and finished fourth. In 2018 he was fifth at the Tour de France and fourth at the Vuelta a España. In 2019 he finished third at the Tour de France, behind Egan Bernal and Geraint Thomas, his first Grand Tour podium.

In later years he worked mainly for Primož Roglič and Jonas Vingegaard. At the 2022 Tour de France he was one of the Jumbo–Visma riders who isolated Tadej Pogačar on the Col du Granon, and he crashed out on stage 15 while 13th overall. ProCyclingStats records serious crash injuries in 2022 (Tour de France), 2023 and 2024 (both at the Critérium du Dauphiné), which kept him out of the following Tours de France in 2023 and 2024.

In August 2026 Kruijswijk confirmed on the Dutch television programme De Avondetappe that he would retire at the end of 2026, after 17 seasons in the same team structure. His last Grand Tour was the 2026 Vuelta a España, which started in Monaco, where he lives; he finished 79th overall on 13 September. ProCyclingStats counts 24 Grand Tour starts for him: nine Giros, seven Tours and eight Vueltas. His other 2026 results include 43rd at the UAE Tour, 45th at Tirreno–Adriatico, 90th at Liège–Bastogne–Liège, 36th at the Tour de Romandie and 60th at the Tour de Suisse.
