Biography

Tim Rex is a Belgian rider from the German-speaking east of the country, born on 11 April 2004. ProCyclingStats gives Aachen as his birthplace. His older brother Laurenz is also a professional cyclist. He rode for IWG Wapi Cycling Team in 2022, then for the Continental teams Circus–ReUz–Technord in 2023 and Wanty–ReUz–Technord in 2024. As an under-23 rider he was eighth at Eschborn–Frankfurt U23 in 2023, and in 2024 he won the mountains classification at the Course de la Paix U23 and finished eighth at Liège–Bastogne–Liège U23. In the same year he was third on a stage of the Tour de l’Avenir.

He joined Team Visma | Lease a Bike Development at the start of 2025 and began riding regularly with the WorldTeam that season. In July 2025 the team offered him a professional contract for 2026 and 2027, together with Pietro Mattio. On 8 September 2026, before the end of his first WorldTour season, it extended his contract to the end of 2029. The team describes him as a strong climber who is also very versatile. He is 1.90 m tall and weighs 70 kg.

His 2026 season began with the Santos Tour Down Under in January and included Strade Bianche, Tirreno–Adriatico, Itzulia Basque Country and Liège–Bastogne–Liège. In May he rode his first Grand Tour, the Giro d’Italia, as a support rider for Jonas Vingegaard, who won the race. On stage 14 he was asked to work at the front of the bunch, and his effort on the Lin Noir climb, with a strained expression, was widely shared on social media. On stage 19 he spent long periods controlling the peloton, and on stage 20 he set the pace before Vingegaard’s final attack on Piancavallo. He finished the Giro 90th overall. Later in the year he rode the Vuelta a Burgos, the ADAC Cyclassics (40th), the Bretagne Classic and the Canadian WorldTour one-day races in Québec and Montréal.
