Biography
Bart Lemmen is a Dutch road cyclist who rides for Team Visma | Lease a Bike. He was born on 14 October 1995 in Utrecht. His route to the peloton was unusual. After graduating from the Royal Military Academy, he worked as an officer in the Royal Netherlands Air Force, where he was a platoon commander in airfield protection and rose to the rank of captain, and only then took up cycling seriously.
He raced for the amateur team WV West Frisia from 2018 to 2021 and turned professional in 2022 with the Dutch team VolkerWessels. In 2023 he rode for the American team Human Powered Health, finishing fourth in the Dutch national road race in both 2022 and 2023, and fifth overall at the 2023 Okolo Slovenska.
He joined Visma | Lease a Bike in 2024 and made an immediate impression at the highest level. He was fifth overall at the Tour Down Under, second overall at the Tour of Norway and tenth at the UAE Tour. In June 2024 he was a late addition to the team’s Tour de France squad when Sepp Kuss had not recovered enough from COVID-19, and he played a part in Jonas Vingegaard’s second place. He was later picked for the Dutch team at the world championships. His contract with Visma runs until the end of 2029.
In 2025 he won a team time trial stage at Paris–Nice with his team and finished second overall at the Okolo Slovenska. His 2026 season included several good results. He was fifth at the Muscat Classic in February, rode the Giro d’Italia, where he placed 30th overall, and took two third places in stages at the Tour de Suisse on his way to 10th overall. At the Tour de Pologne in August he won stage 4 in Karpacz, his one victory of the season, and finished fifth overall.
