Biography

Wout van Aert was born on 15 September 1994 in Herentals, Belgium. He began in cyclo-cross, where he was world champion in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and Belgian champion five times. On the road he rode for Vérandas Willems–Crelan in 2017 and 2018, then joined the Dutch team now called Team Visma | Lease a Bike in March 2019. In September 2024 he re-signed with the team on a deal that runs to the end of his career.

His first major road wins for the team came in 2020, when he took Strade Bianche and Milan–San Remo, beating Julian Alaphilippe in a two-man sprint in Sanremo. In 2021 he won three Tour de France stages (Mont Ventoux, the stage 20 time trial and the final stage in Paris), plus Gent–Wevelgem, the Amstel Gold Race and an Olympic silver medal in the road race. In 2022 he won the Tour’s points classification and three stages, and he won the E3 Saxo Classic in both 2022 and 2023. He has also won silver at the road world championships in 2020 and 2023.

Injuries have interrupted several seasons. A crash in the 2019 Tour time trial at Pau ended his race, and in 2024 a fall at Dwars door Vlaanderen broke his collarbone and ribs. Later that year he won three stages at the Vuelta a España before leaving the race after a crash on stage 16. In 2025 he won stage 9 of the Giro d’Italia into Siena, which gave him a stage win in all three Grand Tours, and then won the final stage of the Tour de France on the Champs-Élysées.

A fractured ankle from a cyclo-cross crash in Mol in early January delayed his 2026 preparation. In the spring he was third at Milan–San Remo, second at Dwars door Vlaanderen and fourth at the Tour of Flanders. On 12 April he won Paris–Roubaix after going clear with Tadej Pogačar and winning the sprint in the Roubaix velodrome, his second Monument after Milan–San Remo in 2020. An elbow wound from a training crash in June became infected: he won stage 5 of the Tour Auvergne–Rhône-Alpes on 11 June but left the race, and he missed the Tour de France. He returned at the Danmark Rundt, winning the first three stages and the overall title, and at the Vuelta he won stages 13 and 15 and the points classification.
