According to the team’s website, he signed a contract that runs to the end of the 2027 season. ProCyclingStats shows him with Picnic PostNL until early August and with Visma | Lease a Bike from 14 August.

Jakobsen rode for SEG Racing’s development teams from 2015 to 2017 and won the Dutch under-23 road race title in 2016 and 2017. He joined Quick-Step Floors in 2018 and won Nokere Koerse and the Scheldeprijs that year. He won the Scheldeprijs again in 2019 and was Dutch road race champion that season. At his first Grand Tour, the 2019 Vuelta a España, he won two stages, including the final one in Madrid.

In August 2020, in the finish of the first stage of the Tour de Pologne, he crashed heavily after being forced into the barriers and was treated in hospital in an induced coma with life-threatening injuries. He returned to racing in April 2021 at the Presidential Tour of Turkey. At the 2021 Vuelta a España he won three stages and the points classification, his first Grand Tour jersey.

In 2022 he won Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne, stage 2 of the Tour de France, and the European road race championship in Munich. He also won stages at Paris–Nice, Tirreno–Adriatico, the Tour of Belgium and the Danmark Rundt in his Quick-Step years. For the first months of 2026 he raced for Picnic PostNL, including the AlUla Tour and the UAE Tour. When he moved to Visma | Lease a Bike he said the team was the right environment in which to rebuild towards his best level and compete for victories again. After joining he won two races on the national calendars, Profronde Almelo on 28 August and the GP Dr. Eugeen Roggeman in Stekene on 24 September. He finished fourth on stage 3 of the Tour of Guangxi in October.
