Biography
Tim Wellens is a Belgian road cyclist who rides for UAE Team Emirates XRG. He was born on 10 May 1991 in Sint-Truiden and comes from a cycling family: his father Leo and his uncles Paul and Johan Wellens all raced as professionals in the 1970s and 1980s. He rode as a junior for the Avia team and then for the Davo–Lotto development team, and turned professional in the middle of the 2012 season with Lotto–Belisol.
He stayed with the Lotto team for more than ten years. He won the Eneco Tour, now the Benelux Tour, in 2014 and 2015, and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal in 2015. In 2016 he won the final stage of Paris–Nice, stage 6 of the Giro d’Italia at Roccaraso, and the Tour de Pologne, where his solo win into Zakopane in driving rain gave him a lead of more than four minutes. He won the first Tour of Guangxi in 2017, the Vuelta a Andalucía and a second Giro stage in 2018, and led the mountains classification of the 2019 Tour de France until stage 17. At his first Vuelta a España, in 2020, he won two stages. He also won the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca four times.
Wellens joined UAE Team Emirates in 2023. A crash at that year’s Tour of Flanders broke his collarbone in four places and kept him out of the Tour de France, but he won the Benelux Tour for a third time. In 2024 he became Belgian time trial champion, rode the Tour de France for Tadej Pogačar and won the Benelux Tour a fourth time, a record. In 2025 he won the Belgian road race title and stage 15 of the Tour de France into Carcassonne.
In 2026 he won the Clásica Jaén in February, then broke his collarbone in a crash at Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne. He came back to ride the Tour de France for Pogačar’s winning team, was second in the Belgian time trial championship, won the Tour of Britain in September and finished third at the CRO Race.
