Biography

Rui Filipe Alves Oliveira is a Portuguese road and track cyclist, born on 5 September 1996 in Vila Nova de Gaia. He is 1.83 m tall. His twin brother Ivo Oliveira is also a professional cyclist, and the two have been teammates at UAE Team Emirates since 2019. The team’s official roster confirms Rui for 2026.

Oliveira’s biggest results have come on the track. As a junior he won bronze medals in the scratch and, with Ivo, in the madison at the 2014 world junior championships. In 2017 he became European under-23 champion in the elimination race, and in 2021 he won the elite European scratch title in Grenchen. He has also won several European medals in the elimination race and the madison. At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, his first Olympics, he won the madison with Iúri Leitão.

On the road he raced for the American development team Axeon Hagens Berman in 2017 and 2018 and won the Portuguese under-23 road race in 2018. He joined UAE Team Emirates in 2019. With the team he has ridden the Vuelta a España in 2020, 2021 and 2023 and the Giro d’Italia in 2022 and 2024, and he was second on a Vuelta stage in 2021. He has finished second in the Portuguese road race championship three times (2021, 2023 and 2024) and third at the 2024 Super 8 Classic. His team describes him as a versatile rider who likes both the northern classics and races that end in a sprint.

In 2026 he raced the Belgian spring classics, including Paris–Roubaix, and finished seventh at the Muscat Classic in February. He was third in the Portuguese road race championship on 28 June, behind António Morgado. At the Volta a Portugal in August he was second in the prologue and took the race lead after stage 1. On the final stage, from Maia to Porto on 16 August, he won the sprint. His team described it as his first professional victory. He also won the points classification. In September he was second on stage 5 of the CRO Race.
