Biography

Adam Yates is a British road cyclist who rides for UAE Team Emirates XRG. He was born on 7 August 1992 and grew up in Bury, Greater Manchester, with his twin brother Simon, also a professional cyclist. The twins took up the sport after their father John was hit by a car while riding and took them to track sessions at the Manchester Velodrome run by his club, Bury Clarion. While Simon joined the British Cycling academy, Adam raced as an amateur in France with CC Étupes, with help from the Dave Rayner Fund. In 2013 he finished second at the Tour de l’Avenir.

He turned professional with the Australian team Orica–GreenEDGE in 2014, at the same time as his brother, and won the Tour of Turkey in his first season. In 2015 he won the Clásica de San Sebastián. At the 2016 Tour de France he finished fourth overall, 21 seconds off the podium, and became the first British rider to win the young rider classification. He was second at the 2018 Critérium du Dauphiné, second at the 2019 Tirreno–Adriatico by one second, and was declared winner of the 2020 UAE Tour when the race was stopped because of COVID-19 cases.

Yates rode for Ineos Grenadiers in 2021 and 2022. He won the 2021 Volta a Catalunya, finished fourth at that year’s Vuelta a España and ninth at the 2022 Tour de France. He joined UAE Team Emirates in 2023. On the opening stage of the 2023 Tour in Bilbao he beat his brother to the line to take the stage and the yellow jersey, and he finished third overall, riding as co-leader with Tadej Pogačar. That year he also won the Tour de Romandie and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal. In 2024 he won the Tour of Oman and the Tour de Suisse, finished sixth at the Tour de France and won a stage of the Vuelta a España.

In 2026 he was second at the Muscat Classic, third at the Tour of Oman and won O Gran Camiño with a stage win. A crash on stage 2 of the Giro d’Italia left him with a concussion and he did not start the next stage. He rode the Tour de France for the team and finished 21st overall.
