Biography

Juan Pedro López Pérez, known as Juanpe López, is a Spanish climber, born on 31 July 1997 in Lebrija. He is 1.70 m tall and weighs 60 kg, and carries the nickname El Patrón. He joined Movistar Team for the 2026 season from Lidl–Trek, the team he rode for from 2020 to 2025 after a trainee spell in 2019.

López turned professional in 2018 with Polartec–Kometa, after coming through the development team of the Alberto Contador foundation. That year he won the Vuelta al Bidasoa overall and finished seventh at the Giro della Valle d’Aosta. In 2019 he won a stage at the Valle d’Aosta, finished fourth overall at the Tour of Antalya and sixth at the Tour de Hongrie. In 2021 he finished 13th overall at the Vuelta a España.

He is best known for the 2022 Giro d’Italia. He took the race lead, wearing the pink jersey, after stage 4 and held it until stage 13. He then finished the Giro in tenth place overall and won the young rider classification. In 2024 he won stage 3 of the Tour of the Alps with a solo attack, and held the overall lead to the end of the race, which gave him his first professional victories. In 2025 he was fourth in the Spanish national road race championship and seventh overall at the Tour de Romandie.

His 2026 season with Movistar included the Giro d’Italia, where he finished 41st overall, and the Volta a Catalunya, where he was 20th. In August he finished 24th overall at both the Vuelta a Burgos and the Deutschland Tour, and in October he was 70th at Il Lombardia.
