Javier Romo

Javier Romo is a Spanish stage-race rider who rides for Movistar Team. He was born on 6 January 1999 in Villafranca de los Caballeros, in the province of Toledo, and lives in Albacete. He is 1.84 m tall. Movistar describes him as having the build of an all-rounder who has also made a name for himself on the climbs.

Romo came to cycling from triathlon. As a junior triathlete in 2017 he was second in a European Cup event, third at the Spanish junior championships and ninth at the World Triathlon Grand Final. He moved into bike racing in 2020, during the pandemic, and joined the amateur team Baqué-Ideus-BH. In only his third road race he won the Spanish under-23 road race title with a solo attack, and he was also third at the Vuelta a Cantabria.

He turned professional with Astana in 2021 and finished fifth overall at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali that year. Movistar says 2023 brought both his best moments and some of his worst: he broke his jaw in a crash at the Itzulia and broke a rib at the Vuelta a España, but he also finished seventh overall and as best young rider at the Vuelta a Burgos, and he won the combativity award on stage 2 of the Vuelta. He moved to Movistar for 2024.

In January 2025 he won stage 3 of the Santos Tour Down Under, his first professional win, and finished second overall. He was also fourth at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, tenth overall at the Tour de Romandie, and won the combativity award on stage 10 of the Vuelta a España.

In 2026 he was third on stage 5 of the Itzulia Basque Country and seventh overall, and he finished 12th overall at Tirreno–Adriatico. He started the Giro d’Italia but left the race on stage 12. He was 23rd overall at the Tour de Suisse and rode the Tour de France for Movistar, finishing 54th overall. In October he finished 12th overall at the Tour of Guangxi, fourth in its mountains classification.
