Biography
Iván García Cortina was born on 20 November 1995 in Gijón, in northern Spain. He won the Spanish junior road race title in 2012, and at 19 he moved abroad to the development team Klein Constantia, which his team profile links to the Quick-Step squad. There he won a stage of the Course de la Solidarité Olympique in 2016. That year he also finished seventh in the road race at the UCI under-23 World Championships.
He stepped up to the WorldTour in 2017 with Bahrain–Merida, which later became Bahrain–McLaren. He won the Red Hook Criterium in Milan in 2017, a stage of the 2019 Tour of California, and a bunch-sprint stage of Paris–Nice in 2020. He joined Movistar Team for 2021 and won Gran Piemonte in 2022 after a sprint at the end of a race marked by splits and echelons. In 2023 he was fifth at the E3 Saxo Classic and second in a gravel race of the UCI World Series, the Hutchinson Ranxo. In 2025 he won a stage of the Vuelta a Asturias and finished ninth at the Tour of Flanders.
Movistar describes him as one of Spain’s best riders for the cobbled classics who is also able to sprint after hard climbs. His 2026 season followed that pattern. He was seventh at the Tour of Bruges on 25 March, 15th at Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne, 24th at Paris–Roubaix and 40th at the Tour of Flanders. In May he rode the Giro d’Italia, where the team presented him as an option for punchy stages and explosive finishes, and he finished 114th overall.
On 1 August 2026 Alpecin–Premier Tech announced that he will join the team for 2027 on a two-year contract, so he leaves Movistar at the end of this season. He is 1.83 m tall.
