Biography

Michel Hessmann is a German road cyclist who rides for Movistar Team. He was born on 6 April 2001 in Münster. As a junior he was German time trial champion in 2018 and finished 4th and 5th in the junior world time trial championships in 2018 and 2019. In 2019 he won the Trophée Centre Morbihan overall.

He moved to the Jumbo–Visma Development Team in 2020, the year he won the German under-23 mountain bike title and took part in the winning team relay at the European road championships. In 2021 he was German under-23 time trial champion and eighth in the under-23 world time trial, and he was third overall at the Kreiz Breizh Elites. In 2022 he finished third overall at the Tour de l’Avenir, with a stage win in the team time trial, and fifth in the under-23 world time trial. He stepped up to the Jumbo–Visma WorldTour team for 2022 and rode the 2023 Giro d’Italia.

In August 2023 his team suspended him after an out-of-competition test taken on 14 June 2023 showed the diuretic chlortalidone. Germany’s anti-doping agency and the World Anti-Doping Agency both considered it plausible that the substance came from a contaminated over-the-counter medicine, and the case ended with a suspension that expired on 14 March 2025. Visma did not extend his contract, which ended at the close of 2024.

Movistar Team signed him in January 2025, and he returned to racing at Milano–Torino in March 2025. He rode the 2025 Vuelta a España. On 9 June 2026 the team extended his contract until the end of 2027. Movistar calls him a valuable domestique and highlights his strength as a rouleur and time trialist and his readiness to work for the leaders.

In 2026 he was second with Movistar in the Trofeo Ses Salines team time trial at Challenge Mallorca in January and ninth on stage 3 of the Volta a Catalunya in March. He completed the Tour de France in July, finishing 104th overall.
