Biography
Einer Rubio is a Colombian climber who rides for Movistar Team. He was born on 22 February 1998 in Chíquiza, in the Boyacá department, and is 1.64 m tall and 56 kg.
According to his team biography, his family left Chíquiza when a drought damaged their potato fields, and they moved to Bogotá. After finishing school, Rubio worked in construction and saved enough to buy an iron-framed bicycle. As a junior in 2015 and 2016 he began to stand out in Colombia, which led an Italian scout to bring him to Europe. He rode for the Italian team Aran Cucine Vejus, where he won the GP Capodarco and a stage of the under-23 Giro d’Italia in 2018 and was second overall in the amateur Giro d’Italia in 2019. He is also a product of the Esteban Chaves Foundation.
He turned professional with Movistar Team in 2020 and has stayed there since. He made his Grand Tour debut at the 2020 Giro d’Italia, finishing 58th. In 2021 he won the young rider classification at the Vuelta a Burgos, and in 2022 he was fifth overall at the Tour de Langkawi.
The 2023 season confirmed his talent. He won stage 3 of the UAE Tour, finishing on Jebel Jais, and stage 13 of the Giro d’Italia, in Crans-Montana. He was 11th overall at that Giro and 16th at the Vuelta a España, riding in support of Enric Mas. His best Grand Tour results are seventh overall at the 2024 Giro and eighth in 2025. In 2025 he also finished fifth at Milano–Torino.
In 2026 he was 23rd overall at the Giro d’Italia and third in the mountains classification. At the Tour de France he crashed on stage 19 into the back of a UAE Team Emirates team car that had stopped suddenly because of fans on the road to Alpe d’Huez, and he withdrew with facial injuries that needed stitches. On 5 June 2026 Movistar extended his contract until the end of 2028, which will make nine consecutive seasons with the team.
