Biography

Jhonatan Narváez is an Ecuadorian road cyclist who rides for UAE Team Emirates XRG. He was born on 4 March 1997 and comes from El Playón de San Francisco, a village at about 2,990 metres in the Sucumbíos Canton of Ecuador. At school he joined a cycling club founded by his teacher, the former Olympic cyclist Juan Carlos Rosero, which also produced Richard Carapaz and Jonathan Caicedo. He won several Pan American junior titles in 2015.

He raced for Klein Constantia in 2016 and for Axeon Hagens Berman in 2017, when he won the Ecuadorian road race title and the Circuit des Ardennes. He joined Quick-Step Floors in 2018 on a three-year contract, but left after one season for Team Sky, later Ineos Grenadiers, where he stayed until 2024. In 2020 he won the Settimana Coppi e Bartali and stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia, finishing more than a minute ahead of Mark Padun. In 2023 he won the road race at the Pan American Games and the Tour of Austria with three stage wins. In 2024 he won the Down Under Classic, was second at the Tour Down Under and outsprinted Tadej Pogačar to win the opening stage of the Giro and take the pink jersey for a day.

Narváez joined UAE Team Emirates in 2025. That year he won the Tour Down Under and the Ecuadorian road title, and was second at the Deutschland Tour. He also worked for Pogačar: his lead-outs set up Pogačar’s attacks at the Critérium du Dauphiné and on the Hautacam stage of the Tour de France.

His 2026 season started with a crash at the Tour Down Under. He returned at the Giro d’Italia and won three stages, at Cosenza, Fermo and Chiavari, before leaving the race on stage 19. In June he won stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse.
