Biography

Davide Formolo was born on 25 October 1992 in Negrar, in the Veneto region of Italy, and lives in Marano di Valpolicella. Movistar describes him as a climber who is at home in all kinds of stage races and in the most demanding one-day events. He turned professional in 2014 with Cannondale and stayed with the same team, which became Cannondale–Garmin, until 2017. He then rode for Bora–Hansgrohe in 2018 and 2019, for UAE Team Emirates from 2020 to 2023, and joined Movistar for 2024.

His first big win came at his first Giro d’Italia, in 2015: he escaped with a group of about twenty riders on stage 4 and soloed the last 14 kilometres to win in La Spezia. That year he also won the young rider classification at the Volta ao Algarve. He finished ninth overall at the 2016 Vuelta a España and tenth at the Giro d’Italia in 2017 and 2018. In 2018 he was seventh at Liège–Bastogne–Liège.

The 2019 season was one of his best. He became Italian road race champion, won stage 7 of the Volta a Catalunya in Barcelona and finished second at Liège–Bastogne–Liège. In 2020 he won stage 3 of the Critérium du Dauphiné, a summit finish at Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, and was second at Strade Bianche. That September he fractured his collarbone in a crash and withdrew from the Tour de France after stage 10. Earlier in 2023 he was second overall at the Saudi Tour. In his last weeks with UAE that autumn he won the Coppa Agostoni (28 September) and then the Veneto Classic (15 October), both after solo attacks. Movistar and ProCyclingStats both count six wins in his career.

ProCyclingStats records a tendon injury in December 2025. His 2026 results include 73rd overall at O Gran Camiño, 67th at the Tour de Romandie and 41st at the Tour of Guangxi in October. He did not finish a number of races during the season, among them the Flèche Wallonne and Liège–Bastogne–Liège in April, the Italian national championships in June and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and Montréal in September.
