Biography
Pelayo Sánchez Mayo is a Spanish road cyclist, born on 27 March 2000 in Tellego, a small community in the municipality of Ribera de Arriba in Asturias. He is 1.77 m tall and weighs 62 kg. He joined Movistar Team in 2024, and ProCyclingStats lists him with the team through 2028. Movistar describes him as a climber of about 60 kilograms who likes short, punchy climbs.
Sánchez was a junior in the Asturian development team MMR Academy and then rode as an under-23 for Gomur–Cantabria Infinita. In 2020 he won a stage and finished second overall at the Vuelta a Cantabria, and he also won the Oñati classic. He turned professional in 2021 with Burgos–BH and rode the Vuelta a España that year at the age of 21. His 2022 season was disrupted by health problems, in particular Epstein–Barr virus.
The year 2023 was his breakthrough. He won the final stage of the Vuelta a Asturias in Oviedo, in front of his home crowd, for his first professional win. He also finished third overall at the GP Beiras e Serra da Estrela and second at the Trofeo Andratx–Mirador d’Es Colomer. At the Vuelta a España he was third on stage 20 into Guadarrama, behind Poels and Evenepoel, received the combativity award that day and finished 37th overall.
In January 2024 he won the Trofeo Pollença–Port d’Andratx, his first victory for Movistar. In May he won stage 6 of the Giro d’Italia from a three-rider breakaway, ahead of Alaphilippe and Plapp, and he finished the race 40th overall. He did not finish that year’s Vuelta.
In 2026 he rode stage races including the Tour de Pologne, where he was 28th overall, the Deutschland Tour, where he was 26th, and the Tour of Guangxi in October, where he finished 27th.
