Biography

Nico Denz was born on 15 February 1994 in Waldshut-Tiengen, in southwest Germany. He rode for the club LV Team Rothaus Baden in 2011 and 2012 and then for the French club Chambéry Cyclisme Formation, which led him to AG2R La Mondiale: he trained with the team as a stagiaire in 2014 and joined it as a professional in August 2015. He stayed with AG2R La Mondiale until 2019, rode for Team Sunweb (later Team DSM) from 2020 to 2022, and has ridden for Bora–Hansgrohe, now Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe, since 2023.

His first Grand Tour was the 2017 Vuelta a España. He rode the Giro d’Italia for the first time in May 2018. ProCyclingStats lists 15 Grand Tour starts for him: eight Giros, five Vueltas and two Tours de France. His results include the mountains classification at the 2017 Étoile de Bessèges, the 2018 Tour de Vendée, a stage of the 2020 Okolo Slovenska (where he was second overall) and stage 6 of the 2022 Tour de Suisse. In 2023 he won stages 12 and 14 of the Giro d’Italia and a stage of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Türkiye, and finished second in the German national road race championships. In 2025 he won stage 18 of the Giro, his third stage win in the race, and finished ninth at Eschborn–Frankfurt. ProCyclingStats records a fractured sternum after a crash at the Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen in September 2024.

In 2026 he started the season with a win in the Trofeo Ses Salines team time trial on 29 January, as part of the Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe squad. He rode the Giro d’Italia (121st overall) and the Tour de France (95th overall), and finished third in the German national road race championships on 28 June. He did not finish several races in the autumn, including the Canadian WorldTour races in September, the World Championships road race and the Giro dell’Emilia. On 23 September 2026 Tudor Pro Cycling announced that he would join the team from 2027, leaving Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe after four seasons. ProCyclingStats lists the Tudor contract until 2029.
