Biography
Mattia Cattaneo is an Italian road cyclist who rides for Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe. He was born on 25 October 1990 in Alzano Lombardo, in the province of Bergamo. He is a strong time trialist and all-rounder who works mainly as a domestique. When the team announced his signing in September 2025, team boss Ralph Denk said he brings race awareness, experience and a big engine.
As an amateur he won the Girobio in 2011 and was third at the Tour de l’Avenir in 2011 and 2012. He joined Lampre as a trainee in 2012 and rode for the team from 2013 to 2016, then for Androni Giocattoli–Sidermec from 2017 to 2019. His first professional win was stage 3 of the 2017 Tour La Provence, and in 2019 he won the Giro dell’Appennino. From 2020 to 2025 he rode for Deceuninck–Quick-Step and its successor Soudal Quick-Step. There he won the time trial stage of the 2021 Tour de Luxembourg and of the 2023 Tour de Pologne, took the combativity award on stage 8 of the 2022 Tour de France and finished eighth in the time trial at the 2023 World Championships. In 2024 he won the mixed team relay at the European Championships and took bronze in the European time trial and in the World Championships mixed team relay.
Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe announced his signing on 8 September 2025, after six seasons at Soudal Quick-Step. His 2026 season began on 29 January, when he won the Trofeo Ses Salines team time trial in Mallorca with his new team. He was named in the team’s eight-rider Tour de France squad, led by Remco Evenepoel and Florian Lipowitz, and was expected to be an important part of the opening team time trial in Barcelona, where the team finished fifth. He finished the Tour 33rd overall and was sixth in the stage 16 time trial.
In June he was third in the Italian national time trial championship. In September he was 16th in the individual time trial at the World Championships in Montréal and, on 22 September, won the mixed team relay with Italy, ahead of France by 8.63 seconds. He was also second in the mixed relay at the European Championships in October.
