Biography

Gianni Moscon was born on 20 April 1994 in Trento, Italy. He grew up on the apple farms north of Trento, which earned him the nickname “Il Trattore” (the tractor). He rode for the amateur team Zalf Euromobil Désirée Fior from 2013 to 2015 and in 2015 became Italian under-23 road race champion and finished fourth in the under-23 world championship road race. Team Sky signed him for 2016.

His first professional win came at the 2016 Arctic Race of Norway, where he won stage 3 and then the overall classification and young rider classification. In 2017 he won the Italian time trial title for the first time, finished third at Il Lombardia and fifth at Paris–Roubaix, and was part of the team that won bronze in the world championship team time trial. In 2018 he again won the national time trial title, took the overall classification at the Tour of Guangxi, won the Coppa Agostoni and the Giro della Toscana, and won the team time trial stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné with Sky. He was fifth in the 2018 world championship road race and fourth in 2019. In 2021, with the team now called Ineos Grenadiers, he won the Gran Premio di Lugano and two stages of the Tour of the Alps, finished fourth at Paris–Roubaix, and rode the road race at the Tokyo Olympics.

Moscon moved to Astana Qazaqstan for 2022 and 2023, to Soudal Quick-Step for 2024 and to Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe for 2025. ProCyclingStats credits him with 11 wins and lists him with the German team through 2027.

His career also includes several disciplinary incidents. Team Sky suspended him for six weeks in 2017 after he racially abused the French rider Kévin Reza at the Tour de Romandie. He was disqualified from the 2017 world championship road race after being towed back to the peloton by the Italian team car, from the 2018 Tour de France after punching Élie Gesbert, and from the 2020 Kuurne–Brussels–Kuurne after throwing a bike at another rider.

In 2026 he started the year with the Trofeo Ses Salines team time trial win on 29 January. He then rode the UAE Tour (98th overall), Milano–Sanremo (123rd), the Giro d’Italia (74th overall) and the Vuelta a España (121st overall), and did not finish Il Lombardia on 10 October.
