Biography

Jan Tratnik, nicknamed “Syuk”, is a Slovenian rouleur who rides for Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe. He was born on 23 February 1990 in Ljubljana and comes from Idrija. His official website describes him as a specialist time trialist and a leader for classics and one-day races as well as a domestique. Basketball was his first sport. He took up cycling in 2007, when a local professional cyclist who lived near him in Idrija invited him on a ride.

He turned professional in 2009 with the Slovenian Continental team Radenska. He rode for Quick-Step in 2011, returned to Radenska in 2012, and rode for the Tirol Cycling Team in 2013 and Amplatz–BMC from 2014 to 2016. In 2012 he was European under-23 road race champion. At Amplatz–BMC he won the Slovenian time trial title in 2015, the national road race title in 2016, and the East Bohemia Tour in both years. At CCC Sprandi Polkowice in 2017 and 2018 he won the 2017 Okolo Slovenska and the 2018 Volta Limburg Classic and was second overall at the 2018 Tour de Luxembourg.

From 2019 to 2022 he rode for Bahrain, under the names Bahrain–Merida, Bahrain–McLaren and Bahrain Victorious. He won the prologue of the 2019 Tour de Romandie and, on 20 October 2020, stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia. He added Slovenian time trial titles in 2021 and 2022, four in total. At Jumbo-Visma in 2023 and Team Visma | Lease a Bike in 2024 he won team time trial stages at Paris–Nice and the Vuelta a Burgos in 2023 and, in February 2024, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, beating Nils Politt in a two-man sprint. He was eighth in the road race at the 2024 Olympic Games.

Tratnik joined Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe in 2025. In 2026 he was named in the team’s eight-rider Tour de France squad as road captain and finished 83rd overall. His other 2026 results include 48th at the E3 Saxo Classic, 50th at the Tour of Flanders, 88th at Liège–Bastogne–Liège, 30th at the Tour of Slovenia and 17th in the individual time trial at the World Championships in Montréal.
