Biography
Vegard Stake Laengen is a Norwegian road cyclist, born on 7 February 1989 in Oslo. He is 1.95 m tall and weighs 79 kg, according to his team. His team explains that Laengen is his surname and Stake his mother’s surname, and that he has a twin brother, Øystein. He has ridden for UAE Team Emirates since 2017, and the team’s official roster confirms him for 2026.
Laengen turned professional in 2009 with the Norwegian Continental team Joker. In 2010 he won the Giro della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia, and in 2011 he took bronze in the under-23 time trial at the European Championships and finished fourth overall at the Tour de l’Avenir. He then rode for Team Type 1–Sanofi in 2012, winning a stage of the Tour de Beauce, and for the French team Bretagne–Séché Environnement in 2013 and 2014. Back with Team Joker in 2015, he won the overall classification of the Tour Alsace. He moved to the WorldTour in 2016 with IAM Cycling. He represented Norway at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016.
He joined the Emirati team in 2017, its first season under that name, and the team calls him one of its founding members. In his first year he finished sixth overall at the Tour of California and won the combativity award on stage 6 of the Tour de France. In 2018 he became Norwegian road race champion. He rode the Tour de France in 2017 and every year from 2019 to 2023, including the 2020 and 2021 editions won by his teammate Tadej Pogačar, and the Giro d’Italia in 2016, 2018 and 2024, the last also won by Pogačar. He also rode the Vuelta a España in 2016 and 2018. In October 2025 the team described him as a trusted road captain when it extended his contract until the end of 2026.
In 2026 he started his season at the Tour Down Under in January and rode the Belgian spring races and the Ardennes classics. He later raced the Tour de Romandie, the Tour de Hongrie, the Tour of Austria, the Tour de Pologne and the Deutschland Tour, finishing 28th overall in Hungary and 52nd in Poland.
