Biography
Remco Evenepoel is a Belgian road cyclist who rides for Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe. He was born on 25 January 2000 in Aalst, in East Flanders, the son of former professional Patrick Evenepoel, who won the Grand Prix de Wallonie in 1993.
He began as a footballer in the youth academies of Anderlecht and PSV Eindhoven and played for Belgian youth teams before switching to cycling full time in 2017. In 2018 he won both the road race and the time trial at the European and world junior championships. He skipped the under-23 category and turned professional with Deceuninck–Quick-Step in 2019, winning the Clásica de San Sebastián at 19 and becoming the youngest winner of a UCI WorldTour race.
A crash at Il Lombardia in August 2020 left him with a fractured pelvis and a lung contusion and kept him out of racing until the 2021 Giro d’Italia. In 2022 he won Liège–Bastogne–Liège, the Vuelta a España, the first Grand Tour won by a Belgian since 1978, and the world road race title in Wollongong, and he received the Vélo d’Or. He won Liège again in 2023 and then took the first of four straight world time trial titles. At the 2024 Paris Olympics he became the first man to win both the time trial and the road race at the same Games. On his Tour de France debut that year he was third overall and best young rider, with a time trial stage win.
In December 2024 he collided with an open door of a postal vehicle in training and broke several bones, and he returned in April 2025 with a win at the Brabantse Pijl. He won a time trial at the 2025 Tour de France but left the race on stage 14 while third overall, later saying he had been riding with a broken rib and sinusitis. In August 2025 he announced a move to Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe for 2026, and Soudal Quick-Step released him a year early.
His first season with the new team brought a long list of wins. He won at Challenge Mallorca and the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, took third at the Tour of Flanders, won the Amstel Gold Race and was third at Liège. At the Tour de France he won stages 15 and 16 and finished second overall, his best Tour result. He then won the Clásica de San Sebastián for a fourth time, the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, the world time trial title and the European road race title.
