Jai Hindley was born on 5 May 1996 in Perth, Western Australia. He is mainly a climber. As a young rider he finished second overall at the 2016 An Post Rás, winning the young rider classification, and fifth at the Tour de l’Avenir. In 2017 he won the Toscana-Terra di Ciclismo and the Tour of Fuzhou. He joined Team Sunweb for 2018.

In 2020 he won the Herald Sun Tour, with two stage wins, and then finished second at the Giro d’Italia. He won stage 18 over the Stelvio, and after stage 20 he shared the lead on time with Tao Geoghegan Hart, but he lost 39 seconds to him in the final time trial. He withdrew from the 2021 Giro before stage 14.

He moved to BORA–hansgrohe for 2022 and won that year’s Giro d’Italia. He took stage 9, moved into the lead on the penultimate mountain stage and kept it through the final time trial. He was the first Australian to win the Giro and the second Australian Grand Tour winner after Cadel Evans, who won the Tour de France. In 2023 he won stage 5 of the Tour de France by 32 seconds, took the yellow jersey for a day and finished seventh overall. He was also fourth at that year’s Critérium du Dauphiné. In 2024 he was third at Tirreno–Adriatico. A crash forced him out of the 2025 Giro on 15 May, and later that year he finished fourth overall at the Vuelta a España.

In 2026 he finished third overall at the Giro d’Italia, 6 minutes 25 seconds behind winner Jonas Vingegaard, after holding third place from stage 19 to the finish. It was his third Giro podium. He then rode the Tour de France, finishing 15th overall, and was sixth at the Memorial Marco Pantani on 12 September. Earlier in the season he was 22nd at Tirreno–Adriatico, 17th at the Volta a Catalunya and 16th at Liège–Bastogne–Liège. ProCyclingStats lists his contract with the team until 2028.
