Biography

Gianni Vermeersch is a Belgian rider who has ridden for Red Bull–BORA–hansgrohe on the road since 2026. He was born in Roeselare on 19 November 1992, the son of the former rider Stefaan Vermeersch. He has raced cyclo-cross, road and gravel, and is classed as a classics specialist. In 2022 he became the first winner of the men’s race at the UCI Gravel World Championships.

Vermeersch started in cyclo-cross and was fifth at the junior world championships in early 2010. He rode for BKCP–Powerplus from 2011, then for Sunweb–Napoleon Games, and after a spell at Marlux–Napoleon Games and Verandas Willems he joined Beobank–Corendon in 2017. That year he won the Slag om Norg. He moved to Alpecin–Fenix, later Alpecin–Deceuninck, in 2020 and stayed with the team until the end of 2025. In 2020 he won the Antwerp Port Epic.

On the road he has had several strong results in the Flemish classics: in 2021 he was seventh at the Tour of Flanders, ninth at the E3 Saxo Bank Classic and tenth at Gent–Wevelgem, and he also rode that year’s Giro d’Italia, finishing 87th. In 2022 he won the first UCI Gravel World Championships in Veneto, Italy, and a stage of the Four Days of Dunkirk. In 2024 he won Dwars door het Hageland and the Belgian gravel title, was sixth at Paris–Roubaix and fifth at the Gravel World Championships. In 2025 he was second at the Grand Prix de Denain and seventh at Strade Bianche. He rode the Tour de France in 2024 and 2025, finishing 107th and 103rd.

In 2026 he was fifth at Strade Bianche on 7 March and fifth at the Clásica Jaén. In the northern classics he was eighth at the E3 Saxo Classic, tenth at the Tour of Flanders and twelfth at Paris–Roubaix. He was seventh in the Belgian national road race championship on 28 June and finished the Vuelta a España in 88th place overall.
