Following a tranquil day for the sprinters, the 2026 Vuelta a España returns to its heartland—the high mountains of Andalusia—for one of the most anticipated stages of this edition. Tomorrow, Stage 12 will take the peloton from the coastal tranquility of Vera up to the rarefied air of the Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory, located more than 2,100 meters above sea level.
With five categorized climbs packed into 167 kilometers, this is not just a summit finish; it is a full day of suffering designed to expose any weakness among the general classification contenders.
The Route: Five Climbs, No Mercy
The race begins gently in Vera, Almería, but the respite is short-lived. The profile is a constant, jagged staircase of ascents.

The initial section averages nearly 8% for 6.6 kilometers. Following a brief plateau and descent, the road ramps up again in the final two kilometers, promising a punchy, explosive finale at a crushing altitude.
The GC Battle: Mas vs. Roglič vs. Gall
Tomorrow is a critical test for race leader Enric Mas (Movistar Team).
Having successfully defended his red jersey through the transitional stages, Mas now faces his preferred terrain. His Movistar team will need to be flawless on Velefique to prevent his rivals from isolating him before the final climb.
