What happened on stage 8

Stage 8 of the 2026 Vuelta ran 171 km from Puçol to Xeraco. Bryan Coquard won the sprint, but the stage is remembered for Pogačar’s crash. According to the official La Vuelta report, he fell at high speed just before the climb of the Puerto de Barx. He tried to get going again, then walked to the ambulance with injuries to his left arm and shoulder.

Pogačar had won three stages and led Enric Mas by 3 minutes 50 seconds in the overall classification, as reported by Domestique. He was the first overall leader to leave La Vuelta after a crash since Igor Antón in 2010. Mas inherited the red jersey and was the first Spaniard to lead the race since Jesús Herrada in 2018.

The exact cause is described differently by different outlets. road.cc reported that he hit debris while drinking from his bottle. The National quoted his teammate Pavel Sivakov, who was caught up in the crash, saying Pogačar lost his balance after hitting a small object. Some reports say it was a rock at the side of the road. No official finding on the cause has been published.

For the immediate reaction, see our reports on the stage 8 abandonment and on Enric Mas’s reaction to taking the red jersey.

Injuries confirmed by the team

UAE Team Emirates-XRG’s medical director, Dr Adrian Rotunno, listed the injuries after hospital checks. Several outlets, including road.cc and Domestique, repeat the same list:

  • a concussion;
  • a displaced fracture of the left collarbone (clavicle);
  • a stable fracture of the C7 cervical vertebra;
  • multiple abrasions.

The team said no other major injuries and no neurological damage were found. “Stable” means the vertebral fracture did not need surgery. The collarbone did.

Surgery and hospital stay

Doctors could not operate straight away. The surgery had to wait until Pogačar had progressed through the concussion protocol. The operation took place on Monday 31 August, and NBC Sports reports that Dr Xavier Mir performed it at Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona. road.cc adds that Spanish press reported pins and plates were used to rebuild the bone.

Rotunno said the procedure “went well” and that Pogačar would stay in hospital for a few days of monitoring. He left on Wednesday 2 September and went home. Žigart’s photo showed him walking in flip-flops with his left arm in a sling and bandages on his chest and knee (Velo).

The hospital timeline is covered in more detail in our reports on the surgery and on his discharge.

When did Pogačar say his season was over?

In the first days after the crash, nobody would commit. UAE team boss Mauro Gianetti said on the Sunday that being fit for the World Championships “doesn’t seem likely” (Domestique). Sports manager Joxean Fernández Matxín said the team had ruled Pogačar out of nothing, but that the focus was on “Tadej the person, not Tadej the cyclist” (Velo). Our own report on Matxín’s comments is here: Matxin puts recovery before the Worlds.

On Saturday 5 September, UAE confirmed he would not race again in 2026. Velo quotes Pogačar: “Of course, this isn’t the way I wanted my season to finish.” Rotunno said there was no benefit in speeding up recovery just to meet a racing deadline. Pogačar said he would focus on recovery and coming back next year. At the time he was a five-time Tour de France winner after the 2026 Tour, with 22 wins in the season, as The National noted.

Return to training

First indoor ride

About 17 days after the crash, Pogačar posted a video of himself riding an indoor trainer with the words “Collarbone strong, head strong” (Cyclingnews). CyclingUpToDate reports that he rode on MyWhoosh, the team’s indoor partner, and said he was taking it step by step. See our own report: Pogačar returns to the bike.

First ride outdoors

On Saturday 26 September, exactly four weeks after the crash, he rode outside near his home in Monaco. His caption read “First day back, last day with the rainbow,” a reference to the world champion’s jersey he would lose the next day in Montréal. The video also showed his surgery scar next to those of Eddie Dunbar and Gladys Verhulst-Wild, who have also had collarbone injuries. He rode with Žigart and Dunbar, and Verhulst-Wild also appears in the video (CyclingUpToDate; Brujula Bike). Our report: Pogačar returns to the road after surgery.

Races Pogačar missed

World Championships, Montréal (27 September)

Pogačar was aiming for a third straight world title. His surgery came less than four weeks before the men’s road race. Slovenia’s national team doctor, Krištof Knap, called a start “not realistic” on 3 September, and Gianetti said it did not look likely (The National). For the race itself, see our World Championships favourites without Pogačar.

European Championships, Ljubljana (4 October)

This was the closest to a comeback. Pogačar is the reigning European champion, and his name appeared on a preliminary Slovenian list. UAE told Cyclingnews there were “no plans” for him to race again in 2026 (Brujula Bike summarises the statement). Around 29 September, El País reported that he was pushing to start and had asked Dr Mir for medical clearance. Escape Collective reported that Mir was willing to give it, but it did not quote him.

Gianetti answered in La Gazzetta dello Sport that his wish to ride was understandable but that it was too early and health came first. Slovenia then named an eight-rider team led by Primož Roglič that did not include Pogačar (Brujula Bike). Speaking to Domestique on 6 October, Gianetti said Pogačar “wanted to ride at all costs” and accepted the decision reluctantly. He said the medical staff made the call: “Maybe nothing would have happened, but if something did happen, it would have been serious” (Domestique). Our own report: European Championships comeback ruled out.

Il Lombardia (10 October)

Pogačar has won Il Lombardia five times, according to Velo, and a sixth win would have set a race record. He was not on the start list.

Comeback plans for 2027

The only plan confirmed by his team is a return to racing in 2027. No race or date has been announced. Escape Collective reported that UAE management named the 2027 Tour Down Under in January as the earliest possible return. Domestique describes a January start as unconfirmed speculation. Treat both as reports, not decisions.

Until the team publishes a 2027 programme, the facts that stand are the ones above: the injuries have been treated, he is riding again, and the medical staff set the pace.

What others said

Pogačar’s former teammate Finn Fisher-Black defended him on the Domestique Hotseat podcast. He said: “People think that he wins so much so he probably doesn’t even care anyway, or it’s about time he had bad luck. But everyone starts each race the same, and he wants to win just as much each day” (CyclingUpToDate). Sivakov called the crash “just really bad luck” on the Cycling Podcast, as quoted by road.cc.
