The five-time Tour de France winner had been one of the main favourites for overall victory and was hoping to complete his collection of Grand Tour titles by winning La Vuelta for the first time.
Instead, the crash forced him to abandon the race and dramatically changed the battle for the red jersey.
Medical examinations confirmed a displaced fracture of his left clavicle, a stable C7 cervical fracture and a concussion. His team said there were no other major injuries or neurological complications.
The collarbone surgery was initially delayed because of the concussion and the medical precautions required following the crash.
What Happens Next for Pogačar?
Pogačar’s immediate priority is now recovery and rehabilitation.
His team has not yet confirmed when he will return to racing, and his participation in the remaining major events of the 2026 season remains uncertain.
The Road World Championships in Montreal, the European Championships in Slovenia and Il Lombardia were among the events that had been on Pogačar’s calendar.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG has previously indicated that it is too early to completely rule out a return in 2026.
The Slovenian had been in control of the race before his crash, but his departure opened the door for a new battle for the red jersey.
Enric Mas took over the lead and subsequently strengthened his position by winning Stage 9 on the Alto de Aitana.
For now, however, attention is firmly on Pogačar’s recovery.
